Women’s Leadership Council

In 2013, the United Way of Midland (UWM) formed its Women’s Leadership Council. Today the group continues to address the challenge of early grade literacy.  The goal of the Women’s Leadership Council is to increase the number of students who are reading proficiently by the end of the third grade.

The Women’s Leadership Council (WLC) launched its Ready to Read  initiative in 2014 for PreK and Kindergarten students. The initiative was funded by women donors to UWM at the leadership level, along with proceeds from a very successful first-time event, Power of the Purse.  At that time, Crockett Elementary had one of the largest group of PreK and Kindergarten students in the District, one of the highest concentrations of economically disadvantaged families, and reading test scores were lacking.

In the Ready to Read initiative, students at Crockett each received their very own kit, complete with 5 books, a writing journal, pencils and pens, and crayons. Women’s Leadership Council volunteers met and read with students throughout the spring.

Ready to Read continues to evolve. For the 2015 – 2016 school year, the United Way Women’s Leadership Council is funding a pilot program – it is providing funds for a full-time Literacy Liaison position to work with PreK and Kindergarten students at Crockett Elementary, and volunteers will continue to work with individual students.

The program at Crockett is outcome focused; students’ reading proficiency will be tracked through the third grade to determine how their proficiency compares with that of their peers. United Way Women’s Leadership Council hopes to expand Ready to Read to other schools in the future.
